Best time of year to camp in Big Sur

by Aventura on June 18, 2023

Big Sur, located on the central coast of California, is known for its breathtaking scenery, with towering redwoods, rocky shores, and rolling surf. It's a popular destination for camping.

The best time to camp in Big Sur largely depends on what you're hoping to experience:

  1. For the best weather: Summer (June through September) tends to be the most popular time to visit. The weather is usually warm, in the 60s and 70s (Fahrenheit), and there's little rainfall. This is also the busiest season, so campsites can fill up quickly.

  2. For less crowded conditions: Late spring (April to May) and early fall (October) are also great times. The weather is usually comfortable, although a little cooler than in summer, and you'll encounter fewer visitors.

  3. For whale watching: If you're interested in whale watching, gray whales migrate along the coast from December to February, and blue and humpback whales from April to December.

  4. For wildflowers: If you enjoy wildflowers, the best time to visit is spring (March to May), when the landscape is beautifully decorated with vibrant blooms.

Please note, Big Sur can receive heavy rainfall in the winter (November to March), which can occasionally lead to road closures due to landslides. Therefore, it's essential to check the weather and road conditions before your trip, regardless of when you decide to go.
