Opening of Grand Canyon’s North Rim Delayed

North Rim, Grand Canyon

The opening of the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, which typically occurs in mid-May, has been postponed this year. The seasonal closure of the rim begins in mid-October, but due to a record-breaking amount of snow this winter, the park will not open until Friday, June 2nd. The delay is necessary to allow for the plowing of State Route 67 and for the reopening of the lodge and other visitor facilities. Visitors and local residents are requested to be patient and cooperate with park staff as they work to ensure the safe reopening of the North Rim roads, trails, and facilities. For those who have made reservations at the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim or the North Rim Campground, it is important to be aware of this delay.

The North Rim has received over 250 inches of snowfall this winter

Starting on June 2, several facilities and services at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will resume operations. The Visitor Contact Station will reopen and ranger-led programs will be available daily. The Grand Canyon Conservancy Bookstore and the Backcountry Information Center will also reopen on this date. Additionally, Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim, which includes lodging, groceries, retail, dining, showers, laundry, and a gas station, is expected to open. The lodge dining room will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with dinner reservations required. Mule rides will also resume, and visitors can contact Grand Canyon Trail Ride at 435-679-8665 or visit canyonrides.com for more information.

Grand Canyon Mule rides planned to resume June 2nd

Beginning on June 9, the North Rim Campground will reopen for visitors. Reservations can be made either by calling 877-444-6777 or by visiting recreation.gov. For those who are unable to secure a reservation at the North Rim Campground, Demotte Campground, which is located 7 miles north of the park entrance in Kaibab National Forest, also has campsites available. Reservations for Demotte Campground can also be made at recreation.gov.

Starting July 1, visitors to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will be able to access the Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads, which will have been closed until then for snow removal and road repairs. In addition, access to popular destinations on the Kaibab Plateau within the park, such as the Widforss Trail, Point Sublime, and the North Bass Trailhead, will reopen after any downed trees that are blocking the routes have been removed. Visitors are advised to check with park officials for any updates on the status of the roads and trails.
